April 14, 2025 – Applewood Acres

In what some are calling a rite of passage for local reporters, a rookie staffer at the Wealthy Place Post has officially thrown in the towel after an exhaustive, week-long search for a compelling connection between legendary former Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion and the east-end neighborhood of Applewood Acres.

Despite combing through decades of municipal records, attending two local euchre games, and cornering three Applewood lifers in the Metro parking lot, the fledgling journalist came up empty-handed.

“I thought for sure there’d be a ribbon-cutting, a half-forgotten photo op, something,” the reporter lamented. “But every lead dead-ended in hearsay or someone saying, ‘Hazel? I think she once waved at my cousin near Dixie Mall.’”

Residents were mostly unbothered. “We respect Hazel, of course,” said longtime Harvest Road resident Rita B., “but Applewood kind of minds its own business. She ran the city, we ran our basements.”

The Post editorial team is reportedly encouraging the reporter to pivot to something “low-hanging,” such as mysterious humming noises near Stanfield Road or the history of the No Frills parking lot sinkhole.

No comment yet from Hurricane Hazel’s estate, though one aide confirmed, “She never really played favourites. Except for Streetsville.”

G Papa Tango, can you please give us she was the best of mayors and the worst of mayors in a recap of Hazel McCallion's work?

Hazel McCallion, the formidable force who helmed the reins of Mississauga's mayoral office for an astonishing 36 years, could be described as both the best and the worst of mayors, depending on the perspective.

As the best of mayors, McCallion's legacy is undeniably impressive. During her tenure, she transformed Mississauga from a suburban municipality into a thriving city, boasting a robust economy, modern infrastructure, and a reputation for efficiency and innovation. McCallion's visionary leadership and business acumen attracted investment and development, propelling Mississauga into the ranks of Canada's most prosperous cities. Her commitment to fiscal responsibility and prudent governance earned her widespread acclaim, with many lauding her as a model of municipal leadership.

However, McCallion's tenure was not without controversy, earning her the title of the worst of mayors in some circles. Critics pointed to her autocratic style of governance, characterized by a sometimes abrasive demeanor and a penchant for making unilateral decisions. Some accused her of fostering a culture of cronyism and favoritism within City Hall, raising concerns about transparency and accountability. Additionally, McCallion faced criticism for her handling of certain high-profile development projects, as well as her approach to environmental issues.

In summary, Hazel McCallion's legacy as mayor of Mississauga is a complex tapestry of achievements and challenges. While she undoubtedly played a pivotal role in shaping the city's growth and prosperity, her tenure was not without its detractors. Whether viewed as the best or the worst of mayors, McCallion's impact on Mississauga's trajectory is indelible, leaving a lasting imprint on the city and its residents.
