Enthusiasm for proposed online Suburban Dictionary waning in face of dearth

What began as a quirky, crowd-sourced passion project aimed at capturing the slang and sayings of suburban life appears to be losing steam. The proposed Suburban Dictionary, billed as a playful but poignant online archive of regional lingo—from cul-de-sac nicknames to grocery store shorthand—has stalled amid a surprising lack of content.

“We expected a flood of submissions,” said co-founder Ellie Tran, who launched the project last fall with a team of suburban linguaphiles. “But it turns out people either don’t think their suburb has a unique voice, or they just don’t know how to describe it.”

Early entries like "mall walk shame," "leaf bag panic," and "driveway nod" generated buzz on social media, but the momentum didn’t last. Now, with only a few dozen entries and dwindling contributor interest, developers are rethinking whether suburbia really has enough shared vernacular to sustain a dictionary at all.

The team is considering narrowing the scope to specific neighbourhoods or encouraging local schools and libraries to host "slang drives" to collect more material. But unless submissions pick up, the Suburban Dictionary may remain more of a cultural wish than a documented reality.
